ARE YOU STIMULANT-DEPENDENT?

Stimulants Come in Many Forms

A stimulant works by acting on the body’s central nervous system (CNS), increasing alertness and cognitive function. There are many types of stimulants, including prescription medications (amphetamines, methylphenidates, and dextroamphetamines) and illicit substances such as cocaine. A higher level of these chemicals in the brain improves concentration and alertness while decreasing fatigue – for example, when someone has ADHD. Stimulants are also prescribed to treat conditions that include narcolepsy and obesity. However, when abused, stimulants can also cause significant negative side effects and trigger addictive behaviors. Like any other addiction, a stimulant dependency can keep you from being the person you truly want to be.
